Helping Families and Friends Honor Their Loved One

Maria M. Gomes

Maria M. Gomes, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, peacefully passed away surrounded by her family at the High Point Hospice House on Monday, June 19, 2023. She was the cherished widow of Joao F. Gomes, who left this world 20 years ago after sharing over 25 years of marriage.

Born and educated in Madeira, she was the daughter of the late Joao Andrade and Silvanna (Freitas) Andrade. Maria’s journey in life took a beautiful turn when she met her beloved husband, Joao, and together they started their family in Madeira. Seeking new opportunities and a brighter future for their loved ones, they made the courageous decision to relocate to the United States, ultimately settling in the Somerville/Cambridge area.

Maria was a pillar of strength and love within her family. She delighted in spending quality time with her loved ones, and her warm and inviting nature made her home a gathering place for countless joyous feasts and shared memories. Known for her culinary talents, she took great pleasure in preparing delicious meals for her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Magno Gomes and his devoted wife Melissa of Tewksbury, Alex Gomes and his loving wife Kristen of Peabody, and Bruno Gomes of Lowell. Maria was also a proud and adoring grandmother to her five grandchildren: Marysa, Mason, Jaxson, Easton, and Maverick.

In addition to her immediate family, Maria is survived by her caring siblings, Joao Andrade and his wife Isabel of Merrimack, NH, Natalia Silva and her husband Antonio of Madeira, Jose Andrade and his wife Celeste of Somerville, Fatima DeCastro and her husband Jose of Lakewood Ranch, FL, and David Andrade and his wife Jezihna of Madeira, and she also leaves her faithful companion, her cat Oreo.

Maria M. Gomes will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy of love, warmth, and the joy she brought to every gathering will forever be cherished by her family and friends. May her soul find eternal peace.

You are invited to her calling hours on Friday June 23, 2023 from 4pm until 7pm at the Mahoney Funeral Home. Her funeral Mass will take place at a later date.
