Madeleine Griffin

Madeleine “Meme” Bernadette (Lachance) Griffin was born in Lewiston, Maine on April 26, 1925 to Blanche (Gonthier) and Gedeon Lachance. She entered Heaven’s gates on January 17, 2022 after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.  

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Raytheon Corporation as an executive assistant, for more than 35 years.

An accomplished cook and baker, Meme also loved knitting, reading, music and watching the golf channel.  She will fondly be remembered for her grilled cheese sandwiches and banana bread. She was a skilled knitter and outfitted her children and grandchildren with many pairs of mittens over the years.

Meme dedicated her life to her four children and nine grandchildren.  She loved all animals, but especially, her Bichon Frise, Buddy, who was her constant companion for many years.  

Some of the happiest days of her life were spent with her family, vacationing at Seabrook Beach.  She was a devout Catholic and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and the Holy Family Parish.

She is survived by her children, Dennis and his wife Janet (Silveria) of Londonderry, NH; Louise Griffin of Hampton, NH; Margaret Sarmento and her husband Richard of Hampton, NH; Timothy and his wife Brenda (Dumont) of Tyngsboro; her grandchildren, Allison Griffin; Nicholas Gys; Taylor Alongi; Richard and Ross Sarmento; Tara Sarmento-Weitz; Robert and Daniel Griffin; her great-grandchildren, Aubrey Gys; Addison and Ayla Alongi; Alaina and Rosie Sarmento; also several nieces and nephews.  She also leaves her best friend of many years, Doris Labbe.

Madeleine was predeceased by her loving husband of 36 years, James G. Griffin who died on October 7, 1984.  She was also predeceased by her grandson and only godson, Zachary Gys of Lowell and her siblings, Olivette Lemieux; Gabrielle Payette; Rollande Gill; Jacqueline Dupont and Jean-Marc Lachance.

The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff at Halycon House, Methuen; the Prescott House, North Andover and Merrimack Valley Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Madeleine’s name to Zack’s Team Foundation, 21 Eastview Avenue, Billerica, MA 01821.

A funeral mass celebrating her life will be held on Friday, January 21, 2022 at 11:00 am at Holy Family Parish, 30 Grafton Street, Lowell, MA. Masks are required. Arrangements by Mahoney Funeral Home, 187 Nesmith Street, Lowell, 978-452-6361.

    My sincere condolences to Madeleines family. I worked with her at Raytheon for many years. She will be missed. May she RIP.

    My heart goes out to you during this difficult time. Our mothers are the center of our lives and your mother sounds like she was the center of yours. I am sure you will carry her in your heart always and good memories will eventually bring a some comfort after this time of sorrow.
