Helping Families and Friends Honor Their Loved One

Laura E. (Mercado) Diaz, 81, a longtime resident of Lowell, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, May 21, 2024, with her loving family at her side. She shared her life with Jose A Rivera for over 50 years prior to her death.

She was a daughter of the late Benigno Mercado and the late Petronila Mendez and was born May 9, 1943, in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico. She moved with her family to the Mainland in 1963, settling in Lowell where she made her home in the City until her death. Laura received an Associates Degree in Cosmetology and worked as a beautician for several years. She was also an accomplished dress maker and specialized in making lavishly adorned Wedding Dresses throughout her lifetime.

Family was her center, and she would always spend time with her children and their families, enjoying family meals and celebrating family events. She liked to sew, loved to shop, enjoyed planting her flowers, and especially enjoyed having her nails done and she never left the house without her red lipstick. She will be missed by all her family and all their friends whom she treated like family. She was a loving, caring person who had an open heart, was funny, took care of everyone, and loved unconditionally.

Her survivors include her children, Brenda Ocasio and her husband, Ricardo, of Lowell, Walesca Nieves of Providence, RI, and Ezequiel Mercado and Kayla Donnelly of Lowell; and her six grand children Jose, Sabrina, Alexis, Joseph, Michael, and Scarlett. She is also survived by her siblings, Rafael Mercado of Providence, Lucy Cruz of Lowell, George Mercado of Lowell, Ana Curet of Lowell, Ana Terwillietr of Providence, and Ezequiel Mercado of Lowell; and her best friend Flor Huertas of Lowell, her many nieces and nephews and their families; and all the friends and acquaintances she made throughout her lifetime.

She was predeceased by her son, Jose E Diaz as well as her brothers, Jose Mercado, Jose Mercado, Louis Mercado, Victor Mercado.

You are invited to her visitation on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, from 9 to 12 Noon at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, Lowell, 978-452-6361. Her Funeral Service will be held at 12 Noon at the Funeral Home followed by procession for burial in St. Patrick Cemetery.
