José “Chechen” Meléndez

José “Chechen” Meléndez was born August 2nd, 1945 in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico to the late Guillermo Melendez and Julia Marquez. Jose grew up in Rio Piedras and Migrated to Lowell, in the 1970s, behind his sisters the late Justina Villegas and Ana Huertas. He then spent his life not just as the patriarch of the Melendez family but helping people throughout the community.

Jose, a skilled carpenter, dedicated his career to restoring historical homes in the lower highland area in Lowell. He took great pride in restoration and enjoyed doing it most with and for his family.

Along with his sisters he owned and operated Botánica Coqui in the Acre for two decades, until his retirement in 2010. Jose was preceded in death by his son Jose M. Melendez, parents Guillermo Melendez & Julia Marquez, sibling Ricardo & Juan Melendez, and his beloved sister Justina Villlegas. He is survived by his sisters Leoncia, Ana (and her husband Alarico Huertas), Julia D.(Fontanez), Carmen, Maria, & Dalila, his brothers Alberto & Julio Melendez.

He is additionally survived and will be remembered with great love by his Nieces, Nephews and their children.

On Wednesday, December 7, 2022 all are welcome to attend his calling hours from 4-7 p.m. at Mahoney Funeral Home, 187 Nesmith Street, Lowell, 978-452-6361. His funeral will begin on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by procession at 10 a.m. to Lowell Cemetery, 77 Knapp Ave., Lowell.
