James Edward Barrett, Jr.

James Edward Barrett, Jr., 92, a son of Lowell, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 8, 2022 after falling asleep on a beautiful May afternoon. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy Gertrude (Walle) Barrett who passed away in 2004.

Son of the late James E. Barrett, Sr. and the late Margaret Agnes (Holland) Barrett, he was born in Lowell and was raised in Pawtucketville. Educated in Lowell’s schools, he graduated as President of the Class of 1947 from Lowell High School and from Harvard College, Class of 1951.

He served with the U.S. Air Force in Korea and many stateside postings. Later, he worked for Raytheon in Waltham before moving on his own as a management consultant, advising family businesses on ownership transfers.

Jim grew up in Lowell and was a member of the Parish of St. Rita where he served as an altar boy for many years, and, along with his brother Tom, sold the Sunday papers outside church after Masses had ended. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars.

Always a family man, he enjoyed time spent with family and friends or traveling with Dorothy. In his retirement, he was able to return to Lowell after so many years away, where he enjoyed the company of his large family and circle of friends.

Survivors include his son, James E. Barrett and his wife, Deborah of Fitchburg; his daughter, Anne Barrett of Philadelphia, PA; his four grandchildren and his five great grandchildren. He is also survived by his dear friend and traveling companion Celina Leal of Algarve, Portugal; his brother, Tom Barrett of Duxbury; his sisters in law, Joan Gorman Barrett of Lowell, and Carole Fiorine Barrett of Naples ,Florida; his cousin, Corinne Barrett and her husband, Richard Gold of Ipswich; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sons, William Barrett and Mark Barrett; his brothers, Richard Barrett, and Edward Barrett; and his sister, Ann Geary and her husband, Paul Geary.

You are invited to call on Monday, May 16th from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m at MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, 978-452-6361.
